Counselor

Karen Curtis

My name is Karen Curtis.I am the school counselor here at West Avenue Elementary School. I began my teaching career with Waco Independent School District in 1999. I have been the school counselor at West Avenue Elementary School since 2017. I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Sociology. After completing my Bachelor's Degree, I worked as a Case Manager and a Project Director for Communities in Schools in Temple Independent School District (1995-1996) and then in Waco Independent School District (1996-1999). From these experiences, I decided I wanted to spend more time with my students and help them to achieve their educational goals, so I decided to get my Teaching Certificate through an Alternative Certification program. I taught special education for ten years at two middle schools (G.W. Carver and G.L. Wiley) and two high schools (A.J. Moore and University). I graduated with my Master's Degree in Psychology from Tarleton State University with a focus on School Counseling. I worked as a Supplemental Instruction Teacher (SIT) at two elementary schools ( West Avenue and J.H. HInes) from 2013-2017 until I became the school counselor here at West Avenue Elementary School. Since joining West Avenue, I have met so many students and their families, met some students who were the children of my former students, and many members of this great community. I look forward each year to continuing to make great connections with all the students and their families as we strive to enjoy the little things, because one day we look back and realize they were the big things.
